Only Superhuman

2107 AD: A generation ago, Earth and the cislunar colonies banned genetic and cybernetic modifications. But out in the Asteroid Belt, anything goes. Dozens of flourishing space habitats are spawning exotic new societies and strange new varieties of humans. It’s a volatile situation that threatens the peace and stability of the entire solar system.

Emerald Blair is a Troubleshooter. Inspired by the classic superhero comics of the twentieth century, she’s joined with other mods to try to police the unruly Asteroid Belt. But her loyalties are tested when she finds herself torn between rival factions of superhumans with very different agendas. Emerald wants to put her special abilities to good use, but what do you do when you can’t tell the heroes from the villains?

I have mixed feelings about this particular title. Honestly, I thought that it would be a bit more tongue in cheek with a more humorous side. It is a good story with many twists and turns and contains a lot of tortured soul type of drama. I thought it got a bit bogged down in the drama department. Nevertheless, I did enjoy it.

Fantastically done and nicely paced- this is a one-shot book at a world similar to Elizabeth Moon's Vata's War series, with more sex, more light-hearted humor, yet with a serious undercurrent that will keep you interested. The last part where the TSC got taken back onto the right track seemed strangely rushed...I was really looking forward to a big showdown with Tai, and then it got covered over in like one paragraph- not sure if it was written that way or was the result of abridgement. The performances were fantastic as usual, especially on the part of Emerald and Psychi. Some parts of this book can come across as a bit crude, especially with the casual way sexuality is flaunted- but that too is part of its charm in a way. What I think is the most impressive performancewise is when Emerald tries to go into a speech of right and wrong and she comes across as awkward yet definitely sincere. The work on Emerald's childhood voice is also noteworthy- some times children voices can come across as kinda fake, but this one is very convincing.

It presents a dense, rich world - a rewarding listen. It's aimed at the lads, with 'PG-13' battles, but language and sex pushing the 'R'. Nice balance of action and psycho-political intrigue. Oh, yes - and one heck of a nuanced lead performance by Elissa Wilmeth! Recommended.

While Only Superhuman is not one of my personal GA favorites, it is an excellent, emotionally intense, action-packed science fiction novel with strong superheroic elements... I would definitely buy a sequel...
