11: Time Nomads

In the blasted heart of the new America, Ryan Cawdor and his band of warrior-survivalists search for hidden caches of food, weapons and technology—the legacy of a preholocaust society—stashed in lonely outposts known as redoubts.

When Ryan ingests bacteria-infested food, he lies near death—his body paralyzed but his mind traveling rapidly back to his early days in the Deathlands...moving through the southwest on post-nuke vehicles called warwags...and his run-in with the Baron.

Towse, near what was once Albuquerque, is a ville in a freakishly beautiful landscape populated by scabbies and armed Apaches. Baron Alias Carson and his bejeweled wife, Sharona, welcom Ryan, J.B. Dix and the Tracker to their treacherous world.

In the Deathlands the past is a dream. The future is a nightmare.

I'm relatively new to DL, never having read any of the books, and just starting to listen to the GA adaptations a couple of years ago. I only now getting up to #11 TIME NOMADS. Generally, I like the DL series and the basic transmat concept that drives the stories. This one just didn't seem to have any punch to it, though. It felt like one of those tv shows where the main character's life is in jeopardy, and all the friends stand around and reminisce. Except here it's Ryan dreaming of a past epidsode when he was still running with Trader. I realize the backstory explains the next revelation regarding his son, but it seemed like a long road to take. Or maybe I just don't find the days with Trader very interesting.
