Two hundred years after a 2001 nuclear holocaust ravaged the Earth, what was once America has been divided among nine mysterious “barons”–genetic hybrids of an ancient alien race that sought to enslave humanity eons ago. The barons are becoming victims of their own greed, and their internal battles have allowed a new entity to attempt a grab for power–The Imperator.
Once Magistrates–keepers of law and order for the barons–the now-exiled and rebellious Kane and Grant help uncover the barons’ dark history and fight to stop them from achieving immortality and holding humankind enslaved forever. Aiding them in their fight are Domi, a feral albino Outlander girl, Brigid Baptiste, a former baronial archivist, and Mohandas Lakesh Singh, a 20th century scientist who was cryogenically frozen, revived by the barons to do their bidding, and now works against their rule from a secret stronghold in the Bitterroot Mountains called the Cerberus Redoubt.
The struggle begins in what’s left of California, where the paths of the Cerberus warriors cross with their baronial enemies–as well as some new allies–and plays out on the baffling island of New Edo, a place of great beauty and pleasure, as well as treachery and primordial danger. In between, the secrets of the mysterious Area 51 are revealed to Kane, who is held prisoner there for purposes of punishment and genetic experimentation.
