Peacer
Unmasked

by Dave Swavely
Dec 1, 2013
1 Hours
Ages 13+
In the first book of the Peacer series, Silhouette, Michael Ares is a war hero hired and given a license to kill by an autocratic regime determined to “keep the peace” in a post-quake San Francisco of the future. He faces a gauntlet of trials on his way to either death or glory, including the impossible dilemma of investigating a murder where all the evidence leads back to him. "Unmasked" is the story of an episode from Michael’s past that is mentioned in Silhouette and comes back to haunt him during the events in the novel. And it is a story about some fine lines that are very hard to walk.

Reviews

This story runs hot and cold, but still gets 4 stars by DWD (Posted on 12/26/2018)
Duration: about 1 hour

GraphicAudio continues to crank out high-quality audiobooks with their own twist. Typically, GraphicAudio adapts a book to become more like an old-fashioned radio play with its own theme music, special effects and lots of different actors playing all of the characters.

Peacer: Unmasked is a prequel to the other books in this growing series. They are set in a future San Francisco - a San Francisco that was heavily damaged in a massive earthquake. Democracy was tossed out in favor of a dictatorship that keeps things under control.

The main character is Michael Aeres, a former soldier turned Peacer, or a policeman with B.A.S.S. (Bay Area Security Service), the company that serves as San Francisco's government. B.A.S.S. officers have almost unlimited authority to act in the name of keeping the public peace, including murder.

When multiple members of a protest group turn up dead, Aeres stakes out the area and makes a disturbing discovery...

As always is the case with GraphicAudio, the production is well done and enhances the story, which runs hot and cold. In this short production a lot of the groundwork is laid down for the rest of the series, including an explanation of the technology, the dictatorship and those that protest against it. Sometimes the explanations overwhelm this little story.
Exposition around action by Amanda (Posted on 8/9/2018)
This short story doesn't have as much impact on the first installment as I had thought it would, nor is it necessarily the best set-up for the first installment in the Peacer series. I think it's best to listen to this after having listened to Silhouette. It further elaborates on some details and scenes that are mentioned in the first book, and that's mostly what it's good for. It raises some potential issues with Ares' character, and room where he could grow and develop as a character... unfortunately, the series doesn't do much with Michael in terms of growth or development. Nor do some of the interesting philosophical issues raised by words or actions in this installment get developed or explored later.

Hard to follow
Not sure yet by Rob (Posted on 10/19/2017)
I listened to this only once and was completely lost. Not sure if it was because of the fact it stems from another story or what, but I was totally lost. I will, however, listen a couple more times just to be fair. I wish there were free Deathlands (as that seems to be the biggest seller) for free just so I can test them and see what they're about.
Do not like the voice by Amy (Posted on 8/31/2016)
I got this as a test to see if I liked this story/series. I do not. Honestly, the voice the actor is using is SUPER grating. I like the story, but the way the actor speaks as the main character is absolutely annoying. I might try this at another time, but for now I'm DNFing.

It was a little slow but I enjoyed the story
Great Filler by J.R. (Posted on 1/18/2016)
between other audio books I have ordered or have already listened to, this was a great filler. Very happy I found GA.
True Peacer by Andrew (Posted on 12/15/2015)
Loved it wish it were longer
Peacer Unmasked by Glenn (Posted on 11/2/2015)
To be fair , I have to admit I did not listen to this all the way through . I am a long time fan of the Deathlands series and have listened as well to some of the western titles and all were great entertainment but this just did not grab me. The tedious narration and drawn out yet not so descriptive layout of the story was not for me.
Peacer Unmasked by Scott (Posted on 10/17/2015)
This isnt my favorite type of story but the production is well done.
Unmasked by Allyson (Posted on 8/6/2015)
This turned out to be a pretty good story. I'll definitely be checking out the rest of the series.

I really wanted to like this title. The blurb caught my attention, but i just couldn't get interested in the story.
There is better stories by Craig (Posted on 1/11/2015)
Found it very slow and the way it was done not on the top of the "must get list"

Not too sure about this one. I just couldn't get into the story although the production side of it was well done.
Fun story by Vincent (Posted on 5/31/2014)
I enjoyed the story, I don't normally get into stories like this one but I still enjoyed it. The story kept me engaged.
Nice Prelude to the Main Series by Armand (Posted on 5/27/2014)
Surprisingly, I enjoyed this! As with Nuclear Bombshell series, it has enough futuristic content to keep me interested, but lacks the humor NB has. Usually I don't enjoy detective/cop type mystery books, but NB and this new Peacer series got my attention! Very well done and a great intro to the Peacer series!

This is terrific! Great job, Graphic Audio...
Peacer Umasked by HOMER (Posted on 1/2/2014)
fast paced and lots of different accents, which keep the story fresh. there's nothing like a mono-tone to kill the mood of the chapter. I may become a fan of this series.
