Once she was Adrienne Satti. An orphan of Davillon, she had somehow escaped destitution and climbed to the ranks of the city's aristocracy in a rags-to-riches story straight from an ancient fairy tale. Until one horrid night, when a conspiracy of forces--human and other--stole it all away in a flurry of blood and murder. Today she is Widdershins, a thief making her way through Davillon's underbelly with a sharp blade, a sharper wit, and the mystical aid of Olgun, a foreign god with no other worshippers but Widdershins herself. It's not a great life, certainly nothing compared to the one she once had, but it's hers.

But now, in the midst of Davillon's political turmoil, an array of hands are once again rising up against her, prepared to tear down all that she's built. The City Guard wants her in prison. Members of her own Guild want her dead. And something horrid, something dark, something ancient is reaching out for her, a past that refuses to let her go.

Widdershins and Olgun are going to find answers, and justice, for what happened to her--but only if those who almost destroyed her in those years gone by don't finish the job first.

Includes Widdershins 1-4 in downloadable formats.

Lovely, original fantasy story with a great world and characters by Rachel (Posted on 10/20/2018)
Probably my favorite Graphic Audio purchase so far. I took a chance on this one because the premise mildly interested me, and hotdang I'm so glad that I did.

Let me first give a hats off to the voice acting. Alyssa Wilmoth's Widdershins is so lovable and fun. She was pitch-perfect casting for such a role, which would have gone easily wrong--she captures Shins' spunk and snarkiness without making her irritating, and also plays her pain and fears perfectly as well. She has to play the character at a variety of ages and maturity levels, and you believe every one. The rest of the characters are truly great as well, from her personal god Olgun (whose heartwarming, familial relationship with Shins' is one of the highlights of the series) to her good friend Robin. Speaking of which, l LGBT representation? Absolute decimation of the Bechdel Test? Check and check. Not to mention, a male character with flamboyant and foppish mannerisms who is not treated as a joke (and is in fact a bada** and major character in the story)? THANK YOU.

And the WORLDBUILDING. Can I just say, I love that the author didn't just go for a Medieval-Britain-esque universe like so many others, but something resembling Renaissance France, from names to titles to an interesting religious system based somewhat on French Catholicism. While the worldbuilding does not consume the story, it is interesting enough that you want to learn more. My only complaint is that there isn't more written in this universe!

If you want a fun, upbeat, sometimes frightening, and easily digestible series with characters you will miss as soon as it's over, look no further.
A Fantasy Series with a Lot of World Building! by Bryon (Posted on 8/10/2018)
Widdershins is a fantasy series that manages to take a lot of the archetypes from Tolkein, and turn them on their head. While some of these are minor stylistic changes, Marmell's commitment to trying out something new really shines throughout the whole series.

The protagonist Widdershins is a thief with a supernatural edge -- namely, that she is the sole worshiper of an ancient god named Olgun. Because Widdershins is his only worshiper, whenever she calls upon her personal god, he is able to answer her with helpful twists of fate and luck. Unfortunately for Widdershins, her enemies range from duplicitous thieves to supernatural monsters and they all want to take her and Olgun down.

The Widdershins Adventures is most interesting in the world that it chooses to build. Instead of a stock British Isles stand-in, the world has a very French flair, and the role of the Church in a world where the gods are directly involved in everyone's day-to-day lives is fascinating. For me, the strongest book was False Covenant, where a supernatural bogeyman arrives in a town bereft of faith. The Irouch, a bogeyman who is both childishly innocent and also sadistically evil, is an amazing villain.

If you've heard a GraphicAudio production, then you know the voice acting, music and sound effects will be amazing. The highlight is Alyssa Wilmoth's performance as Widdershins.

If you're a fan of authors who really breathe life into their fantasy settings like Patrick Rothfuss or Brandon Sanderson but are looking for something that can have fun (while also getting very serious), give this one a listen!
