Cotton Pickens is feeling about as low as a man can get. Held up, robbed and fired from his job as sheriff, things get even worse when someone murders Cotton's horse Critter. And it's all happening just as a flashy, fleshy stage company comes to town.

Some folks demand the show be shut down for immorality. Some folks -- Cotton included -- sure enjoy the proceedings. But when a man gets stabbed to death, a bank safe gets blown up, and another county's sheriff starts imposing his will, Cotton realizes that a dastardly plot is taking over Doubtful. Badge or no badge, Cotton is going to war. To catch a killer. To stand up to some self-righteous fatheads. And for the right to see a little bare-naked leg -- or die trying...

Great book

I guess its just normal for Cotton to lose the whole story and then win in the end. A lot of lewd talk in this one about the shows but nothing major. Interesting how this thing ends. You won't expect it.

Sounds good
Review by Johnny Tai (Posted on 5/23/2013)
Again, like the last book, the timeline of book 4 is kinda messed up...it clearly takes place before book 3, since Upward the bartender is alive in this one, but doesn't jive with neither book 1 or 2 timewise.

At least the plot is less stupid than book 3, and there are some good twists and turns.

The part that bugs me is how the book/s contridict one another and even itself- for example, Cotton claims he was told to turn over his badge cause he was fired...but that wasn't how it happened- they took his badge at gunpoint- and that's not something someone would forget easily- not even someone as dum as Cotton.

Also in book 3 it seems his original horse was alive, yet he was killed in this book- book 4- and that don't make no sense at all!

Also in book 1, his deputies at elast came across as good men for the job, and somehow, by book 4, they are just about as stupid as Cotton and are darn near useless for anything.

I know I complained alot in the past about Johnston and his "perfect heroes," but this is getting to be the other extreme- and I find my self wishing for a bit of that bad heroism back just so the story would pick up the pace a bit.

So far, book 2's the best, the rest are just...bleh...

After all that's said though, the acting's good as ever, and I especially like the effort put into portraying the little French guy who got killed in this book.
