8 Hours
Ages 13+
Searching for his long-lost father, Bransen Garibond is tricked into journeying across the Gulf of Corona to the wild lands of Vanguard, where he is pressed into service in a desperate war against the brutal Samhaist, Ancient Badden.

On an Alpinadoran lake, just below Ancient Badden's magical ice castle, several societies, caught in the web of their own conflicts, are oblivious to Ancient Badden's devastating plans to destroy them.

Bransen becomes the link between the wars, and if he fails, all who live on the lake will perish, and all of northern Honce will fall under the shadow of the merciless and vengeful Samhaists.

I have read the book to this and thought it was alright. Graphic audio certainly made it a much better listen when I found a copy of it. Lots of action in this one!

GA never ceases to amaze me with their production quality. The voice actors bring the characters to life, and the addition of music and sound effects make it a complete auditory experience.

Salvatore definitely added a layer to his Saga of the First King with this story. I enjoy how he writes his characters, and how so many character mingle to create one epic tale.
Thumbs up by Victor (Posted on 4/19/2015)
Introduced us to a world and characters fleshed out in Saga of the First King, and added lots of wonderfull layers! Shades of grey abound confronting motives, wants, necessities, and situations. Entertaining and possibly thought provoking at the same time!

This was on disc at the truckstop... Second title from GA that I purchased... I had never read or heard highwayman but r a Salvatore's work from a life long love of drizzt and I knew it would be both excellent and that he would bring me to spread even without hearing the first book... I was right

The Ancient by Natalie (Posted on 9/24/2013)
The mingle of characters upon Branson's Journey amazing to me, how he comes to meet them, friends with them, and even has you laughing at times with how some of them are in the middle of battles!! This one done, so nicely, with how their lives intertwines and continue on I can't wait to get the next one!
Review by Johnny Tai (Posted on 5/23/2013)
To me, this book just brought SFK above demon war- because it reveals a more complex set of characters- and shows us that not all things are black and white.

The evil dwarves turn out to be kind of loveable and heroic in this book, and the good monks don't appear to be all that good.

I also love how the main hero of this series has a major weakness - mainly he can't go without a soul stone...unlike the nearly perfect heroes depicted in the demon war saga.

The production is perfectly executed- that goes without saying- and I particularly love the accent used for the dwarves- honestly guys, great job on the accents of all characters!

Favorite moment: raft made of troll corpses...lol
