Restored to her former state of health (and determination) Lady Cecelia goes in search of fresh bloodstock-she's had enough of politics. But once again she manages to put herself-and Heris Serrano-at the point where lightning will strike. This time it's invasion from the neighboring empire: The Benignity of the Compassionate Hand. Heris is only a civilian now, with a space yacht-what can she do in the face of a full-scale fleet of warships? But she is also a Serrano-born to lead.

Aim, Fire, Ready. by Catdaddy (Posted on 5/12/2015)
This half of the story adds another trope from "Vatta's War": the powerful (famous, reputable) family protecting the intrepid daughter from afar.

Cecilia's story here is largely about horsebreeding, which seems to be a metaphor for the lineage of the noble families in the story. Serrano’s story is rather more interesting, trying to route out double-agents and pirates. In fact, it is in this line that the story becomes, at last, truly gripping, including a cracking space battle. The kids' story somehow logically leads to a scene we'll call "the attack of the maiden aunts." There are, in point of fact, four of them.

Admittedly, the scenes of vindication in this drama outweigh the scenes of frustration. It is an imbalance, but who doesn't love a good comeuppance? But ultimately, this is the episode of "Serrano’s Legacy" where, thus far, we see most clearly the Elizabeth Moon of the "Vatta's War” saga. She is most welcome here.

The drama is a strong PG - not quite PG-13 - for some action, no language, and the barest hint of offstage sex.
