2 : Elantris (2 of 3)

by Brandon Sanderson
May 1, 2009
6 Hours
Ages 13+
The city of the gods. Elantris once stood as the symbol of all that is beautiful. A sprawling metropolis of unrivaled grandeur, it was a symbol of power and strength, built to be as imposing as it was magnificent.

The only thing more glorious than the city itself was its inhabitants, Godlike beings, with silvery skin and hair of the purest, flowing white. Able to create powerful magics with a mere wave of their hands, the Elantrians were able to heal mortal wounds and create any object they desired. To be an Elantrian was to be without sickness, without pain and without want.

And anyone could become a god. Through a process known as the "Shaod",a normal person could go to bed one night and awake the next morning to throw away the shackles of mortality and become a being of incomparable power and grace. With Elantris as their beacon, the light inside all humanity was allowed to shine, elevating it to new heights.

But Elantris fell...ten years ago.

The story picks up here by ZJ (Posted on 8/22/2018)
As I said in my review of the first part of this story, I chose to listen to the GA adaptation of this story before reading the book, which I almost never do. The book was recommended to me by friends and though find it a bit difficult to get into epic fantasy stories, this one ended up grabbing me, and I think a lot of that is thanks to GA's great work in producing this title.

The story picks up a bit in this second part, with the stakes rising and the machinations drawing the characters closer to the story's apex. The end of this part was pretty exciting and I found myself more eager to move on to the final part than I was to move on to this second part after listening to the first of the three parts of this story.

As I said in my review of the previous part of this story, the quality of production is very slightly less than that of GA's newer titles, but it may only be noticeable to people who listen to a lot of audio drama. A point I forgot to mention in my review of the first part is how much I enjoyed James Konicek's narration of this title. I've listened to so many GA titles with Rick Rohan as the narrator and initially wasn't sure how I'd feel about James Konicek in that role, but he was just great.
The Story Continues by Tyler (Posted on 8/14/2018)
I really enjoyed this part of Elantris. I like the revelations as the story moved on and the end was pretty crazy. This part has the same problem as the first where the effects drown out the narration and acting but I found it more noticeable in this part than the other. The battle scene was especially hard to make out but it still didn't really detract from the story since I could figure out what was going on.

That being said, this is a very enjoyable series and I'm looking forward to listening to the final part.
WOAH by Odis (Posted on 7/13/2018)
Stuff gets pretty bananas in this part. This whole book is a slow build, but it's so great all around! Really great characters and concepts. Mr. Sanderson makes a world that you can fall in love with and want to live in a while!
AonDor is epic by Gavin McNeil (Posted on 6/14/2018)
Great amount of fun from this this fantasy. I love the exploration of the AonDor magic system- Hard Magic Systems are some of my favorite bits in fantasy, and no one does magic like Brandon Sanderson
More & more by Ryan (Posted on 6/1/2018)
The plot draws you in as the struggle between the suffering elantrians and the high stakes politicking outside leaves you needing more and more
It's hard to give it anything else than 5/5 by Patrick (Posted on 4/30/2018)
If you've listened to anything else by Sanderson, this is a must!
Elantris part 2 of 3 by Lene (Posted on 6/20/2017)
This was my first time listening to a graphic audio production, I have listened to most of Sandersons other books as audiobooks. I start by writing a review of the second part of the book since that was where I started listening (I read the first third of the book in paperback version). As many others have remarked; the middle third of the book is a bit slow compared to the first and the third. I found that the actors/performers, the music and the sound effects helped me stay interested, I never considered going back to my paperback version (which I often do while listening to audiobooks during slow sections of books). I generally thought the actors did a great job, even if Serene sounded different than I had imagined. The times I picked up my book to check if parts of the text was missing I found only some small parts missing (apart from "he said" and descriptions of sounds heard in the background which have been removed from the text).
Awsome by Carlos (Posted on 6/11/2017)
I have read and listen to all of the mistborn series top notch writing. I didn't I would find another series as good. Elantris as a read filled me with awe.....but this graphic audio is by far the beSt story to hear. Flawless in my humble opinion
Awesome by Ryan (Posted on 2/4/2017)
Very deeply wove plot that you can't put down.
Wonderfully Done by Cassiopeia (Posted on 5/5/2016)
Elantris is easily my favorite Brandon Sanderson book and, quite possibly, my favorite book of all time. So imagine my surprise when I learned that GraphicAudio had not only done a rendition of the book as an audio play, but that they did it so well. The music was phenomenal and I loved how they represented the different types of magic used. The voice cast was also amazing with special praise for the voices of Raoden, Galladon, and Hrathen. The only voice I wasn't especially fond of was Serene's. She sounded too old and too...rough for the strong yet refined princess of Taod. The actress did, however, have a good grasp of the character and, for the most part, I was able to enjoy her performance. All in all, a fantastic rendition of Brandon Sanderson's first book and a fabulous recommendation for GraphicAudio.
Awesome story by Steven (Posted on 3/10/2016)
The plot thickens as the story gets deeper. I found myself staying up just to listen a bit longer.

This AMAZING book + Graphic Audio's AMAZING presentation = experience of a lifetime! I would say it's better then the movies! You get the full complexity of an amazing book by the very experienced Brandon Sanderson while your imagination is assisted by a variety of sounds, different voices and sound effects! And all of this you can experience the go! Beyond amazing.
About the book: The first part was exiting and introduced you to this cool new world with lots of mysteries and cool characters... The Second part however sags a bit. Middle-part-drags-a-bit syndrome.

Blown away!! Again by Meagan (Posted on 3/23/2015)
I read this authors book "Warbreaker" long before I discovered graphic audio. I love his writing then, thinking it would make an amazing movie.

So, when I found out he wrote this too, I had to get the graphic audio immediately. It has intrigue, romance, mystery, action, more action, excellent acting, and just... Oh man. You won't be let down at all.

Yes, it starts out slow, but if you give it a chance, it will become one of your favorites.

Highly recommended!!!
Elantris 2 by John (Posted on 3/8/2015)
Raoden's vocal actor needs special congratulations in my opinion.

Between Brent Weeks and Brandon Sanderson, my mind's eye is sensationalized. I am enthralled to reach out for each upcoming release.

Johann Dettweiler seems to be the mastermind for this genre types. Thank you Johann.

The voice actors bring such variety and their accents sweeten the story. The music scores added notably behind the dialog evoke emotion, the sound effects amaze the mind.

All this added and mixed properly transforms a latent paged novel into "The Movie in my Mind."

Elantris 2 : Elantris (2 of 3) by TIM (Posted on 10/3/2013)
I believe this set is a Must HAVE...
I bought all three sets. I have listened to them three times already. My disc 5 of six of part three of this series was damaged so I am Missing from them being in the home of the uncle after the collapse of the entry skips to how the princess and the bad guy in her homeland. I am going to have family video resurface damaged disc.
Audio theater fans will enjoy this production. by AudioFile Magazine (Posted on 8/19/2013)
Elantris, once a glorious capital city of magical beauty and god-like beings, is now decayed. The magic that sustained the city and its inhabitants stopped working. Can it be restored to its former luster? The second of a three-part dark epic fantasy combines a narrator and a thirty-voice cast. Narrator James Konicek delivers a straight reading while the others give dramatic performances of the characters. Accompanying music and sound effects are featured—turning carriage wheels, footsteps, background conversations—although some listeners may think their frequency overwhelms the story. The story itself involves engaging themes: religious freedom, political greed, and individual rights. Audio theater fans will enjoy this production. A.L.B. © AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine
Review by Daniel Morrow (Posted on 5/23/2013)
I started with the second part and found the story hard to just pick up on, unlike many of the other graphic audio books. Found it hard to care one way or the other about the very very dry and unremarkable characters. If your looking for good fantasy I'd suggest demon wars saga or Blue moon rising both of which are top notch and fun.
Review by Jamee Reed (Posted on 5/23/2013)
In response to Daniel's comment on 7/13/09...common sense in a "series" would be to start with Part ONE and not smack dab in the middle of the series. Would you go see Avatar in IMAX 3D an hour after it started? For those unsure of Elantris, disregard the previous rating. Elantris is stellar and mesmerizing.
