Feb 1, 2009
4 Hours
978-1-59950-525-1
Ages 18+
From his Missouri farm, the boy traveled west. In his hand was a Navy Colt given to him by Jesse James. By his side was the old mountain man named Preacher, who would teach young Smoke Jensen everything he needed to fight like the devil, and die like a man.

And in his heart...was vengeance.
His enemies destroyed everything he'd ever loved.
But they made one mistake.
They let Smoke Jensen live.

Smoke Jensen 1 by Kevin (Posted on 1/2/2018)
It was a bit difficult going from "reading" to "audiobooks". It was just as big a change going from "standard audio" to "acted-out audio". I wasn't quite sure what to think about it, so I weighed the criteria...
I love westerns, both books & movies, so that's 1 check.
I love the pace of W.W. Johnstone's books, check 2.
I needed more than radio for all the time spent driving, daily, check 3.
The actors do a dang good job, check 4.
Smoke Jensen is a baaaad man, check 5.
I found myself staying outside in the car, listening until I reached a stopping point, yup another check.
I grinned like a cheshire cat when both Smoke & Preacher exacted revenge with gunsmoke or biting humor, check, check & checkmate.

Thanx WW & JA Johnstone and Graphic Audio for making my driving worthwhile...

Transportive -- Like a Story Told Just for You by Dee Emm Elms (Posted on 12/11/2016)
The first book in this series feels like you're being told a very personal story by someone at a campfire. If the adult material were excised, it would feel like a grandfather telling the tale to his grandson, with the implication that -- though the narrator isn't Smoke -- he saw a lot of what went down in Smoke's life. As is, it feels like you're sharing a warm fire at a crossroads with a man who knows the facts and the legends of this outlaw anti-hero and is willing to tell you if you share some of your bacon with a lonely outsider in need of some grub.

SPOILERS: The story is engaging, and the character work is terrific. Particular praise goes to Preacher, a character I didn't trust at first and thought would actually become the book's chief antagonist. Imagine my surprise when he became so integral that I was crying during a particular scene in this story.

This book has made me eager to continue reading about Smoke, but also to read about Matt and the other Jensens.

secretary by Dayra (Posted on 11/5/2015)
Amazing. I had a bit of trouble at first due to the old western accent the narrator has and lays on thick, but once you get past that, the series is amazing. From Preacher to Charlie Star and Luke Nations, all these old friends and new friends help make Jensen the legend he deserves to be.
