Galactic Football League
The Detective

by Scott Sigler and Matt Wallace
May 8, 2017
3 Hours
Ages 13+
GFL star Quentin Barnes is an orphan born into a culture that prizes family connections above all. He spent his youth struggling with poverty. When he signed his deal with the Ionath Krakens and became rich, one of the first things he did was hire a private detective to find out if his family is still alive.

THE DETECTIVE is the story of that search, as seen through the eyes of Frederico Esteban Guissepe Gonzaga — a.k.a. “Fred,” a master of disguise and a truly dangerous human. But Fred’s past is just as big a mystery as is the whereabouts of Quentin’s family. This gritty scifi/noir novel follows the tradition of ALTERED CARBON and BLADE RUNNER, giving you an anti-hero that won’t stop until the job is done.

GFL TIMELINE:
THE DETECTIVE runs from roughly Week Seven of the 2683 regular season in THE STARTER (GFL Book II) through Week Ten of the 2684 regular season in THE ALL-PRO (GFL Book III).

Reviews

Sci-fi noir by Zack (Posted on 2/27/2019)
SCi-fi detective stories are among my favorite subgenera in fiction, so this GFL tie-in story was a treat. The Detective again has Scott Sigler collaborating with the excellent Matt Wallace to great effect. Having read a good chunk of Matt’s work, I can say that he has a talent for writing sci-fi-fi noir, so there was nobody better for Scott to collaborate with on this story. This story probably stands a bit above Title Fight as my favorite of the GFL tie-in stories and GA has done their usual great work in adapting it.
Following Book 3, and Enriching the GFL Universe by Catdaddy (Posted on 11/29/2017)
As advertised, this is a side-sequel to GFL Books 2 and 3, dealing with Frederico’s search for Quenton‘s family. (Exactly halfway through the story is a scene overlapping the very beginning of GFL Book 3). There is enough background that this story might work for folks who haven’t listened to any GFL – but at least Books 1 and 2 should ideally be heard before listening to this; ideally it follows Book 3.
"The Detective" deeply enriches the GFL universe: Frederico is a rather thinly-written character in the long stories, but has a chance to shine here and gains a lot of depth. The drama is a classic PG-13, with film noir-style, bruised knuckle action.
Excellent background filler! by Armand (Posted on 6/4/2017)
Another excellent "fill-in" for the GFL series! Frederico is good!
this was cool by rafael (Posted on 5/25/2017)
I really liked the way they included and grave answers to questions I had.
Somewhat of a disapointment by damien (Posted on 5/16/2017)
I found it hard to get into the story, I like the character and was disappointed that his solo journey didn't hold up to expectations. Good voice acting and effects, but the story basically was the stitched together gaps between several GFL books with no real surprises or information.
Acting, top notch. Story, mediocre. by Amy (Posted on 5/15/2017)
I tried to like this, but the only saving grace was the voice acting. Mostly, it was Alejandro Ruiz's acting, because he has consistently been a favorite of mine throughout this series as Frederico. He made this story.
