Gunnie Rose
1 : An Easy Death

by Charlaine Harris
Oct 29, 2018
6 Hours
Ages 18+
The beloved #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Sookie Stackhouse series, the inspiration for HBO’s True Blood, and the Midnight Crossroad trilogy adapted for NBC’s Midnight, Texas, has written a taut new thriller—the first in the Gunnie Rose series—centered on a young gunslinging mercenary, Lizbeth Rose.

Set in a fractured United States, in the southwestern country now known as Texoma. A world where magic is acknowledged but mistrusted, especially by a young gunslinger named Lizbeth Rose. Battered by a run across the border to Mexico Lizbeth Rose takes a job offer from a pair of Russian wizards to be their local guide and gunnie. For the wizards, Gunnie Rose has already acquired a fearsome reputation and they’re at a desperate crossroad, even if they won’t admit it. They’re searching through the small border towns near Mexico, trying to locate a low-level magic practitioner, Oleg Karkarov. The wizards believe Oleg is a direct descendant of Grigori Rasputin, and that Oleg’s blood can save the young tsar’s life.

As the trio journey through an altered America, shattered into several countries by the assassination of Franklin Roosevelt and the Great Depression, they’re set on by enemies. It’s clear that a powerful force does not want them to succeed in their mission. Lizbeth Rose is a gunnie who has never failed a client, but her oath will test all of her skills and resolve to get them all out alive.

“Immersive, involving, suspenseful, and intriguing, with a main character you’ll love.” —Lee Child, #1 internationally bestselling author of the Jack Reacher novels

“When a master of her craft offers to tell you a story, let her. The results are dazzling.” —Seanan McGuire, New York Times bestselling author of the Alex, Hugo, Nebula, and Locus Award-winning Wayward Children series.

Very interesting setting by Neil (Posted on 2/6/2019)
Colleen does an excellent job as Lizbeth "Gunnie" Rose. I enjoyed her narration - particularly when Lizbeth describes the history that lead to the fracturing of the United States. I found that history intriguing. With that segment, the listener has a strong mental picture of how things are in this world and how the mercenaries (Gunnies) fit right in. Very much like an old Western with a bit of magic thrown in, which was done very well.

As always the GA cast is phenomenal. The story is action packed. I really enjoyed this one.
Solid work made better by GA by Jordan (Posted on 12/29/2018)
I have found Harris' writing to be spotty. Main characters can die off-screen with a single sentence. She can get quite lazy with her endings. But the writing on this was better than average for her.

I am very sure that GA's voice acting helped. I was very impressed by Colleen Delany as Lizbeth Rose. I did find Eli to be a little bit of a flat character. His main job seemed to be a combination of "tall dark and handsome" and "foil for the main character". But Robbie Gay really helped make the best of it.

The magic was great, the action was good (GA's sound sound assets make these come alive), and the alternative history was interesting.

If Eli would have been more interesting, then I would have gone with five headphones.
A brilliant mix of genres by Amy (Posted on 12/9/2018)
Damn, I adored this. When I first saw GA was adapting Harris' new series so soon after its release I got excited. I knew they'd do this well, and of course they succeeded well beyond my expectations. The acting was freaking brilliant as always. Shout out to especially goes to Colleen and Robbie. They got me extremely invested and I adored their characters from jump. Special shout out to Robbie for his accent work. I knew he was in this and yet didn't realize who he played until the end credits.

The story was a fantastic blend of western fantasy alternate time line future. What an interesting world Charlaine Harris has created. And Lizbeth had my heart from the moment she spoke.

I cannot wait to see where this series goes. It has stolen my heart and I don't want it back
