In the cattle drives of the Old West, pumpkin rollers were green farmboys, almost more trouble than they were worth. When Trey McLean leaves his family's East Texas cotton farm and sets off on his own to learn the cattleman's trade, he's about as green as they come. But Trey learns fast. He learns about deceit when a con man cheats him out of his grubstake and about love when he meets the woman he's destined to marry. And when luck finally sets him on a cattle drive to Kansas, Trey learns the trade from veteran drover Ivan Kerbow, but he also learns the code of violence and death from outlaw Jarrett Longacre, a man who will plague his life at every turn.

Great Ride!! by Buddy (Posted on 6/16/2014)
Thank you!!! Up until I found G.A. I had no idea that westerns could be so well done and so entertaining. I am familiar with the major western films ( Searchers, High Noon..), but had never read or listened to any titles.
The Pumpkin Rollers is excellent!! Great characters, the storyline is very involving and consistent. Dialogue fits every character. Equal to an NPR driveway moment .. I could not break away from the story until each disc was finished. Thanks again!!
Brilliant! by Vikki (Posted on 4/22/2014)
I think this should be considered Western history instead of a Western. It is in part a coming of age story and in part a look at a slice of American history that feels real. The characters are three dimensional and react like real people would. The story is expertly presented as only Elmer Kelton can do. The production is flawless and Dylan Lynch is perfect as ever. This was one of my favorites on paper and is now one of my favorites on audio. Thank you!
