Vatta's War
1 : Trading in Danger (1 of 2)

by Elizabeth Moon
Dec 1, 2009
5 Hours
Ages 13+
Kylara Vatta is the only daughter in a family full of sons, and her father's only child to buck tradition by choosing a military career instead of joining the family business. For Ky, it's no contest: Even running the prestigious Vatta Transport Ltd. shipping concern can't hold a candle to shipping out as an officer aboard an interstellar cruiser. It's adventure, not commerce, that stirs her soul. And despite her family's misgivings, there can be no doubt that a Vatta in the service will prove a valuable asset. But with a single error in judgment, it all comes crumbling down.

Expelled from the Academy in disgrace-and returning home to her humiliated family, a storm of high-profile media coverage, and the gaping void of her own future-Ky is ready to face the inevitable onslaught of anger, disappointment, even pity. But soon after opportunity's door slams shut, Ky finds herself with a ticket to ride-and a shot at redemption-as captain of a Vatta Transport ship.

It's a simple assignment: escorting one of the Vatta fleet's oldest ships on its final voyage...to the scrapyard. But keeping it simple has never been Ky's style. And even though her father has provided a crew of seasoned veterans to baby-sit the fledgling captain on her maiden milk run, they can't stop Ky from turning the routine mission into a risky venture-in the name of turning a profit for Vatta Transport, of course.

By snapping up a lucrative delivery contract defaulted on by a rival company, and using part of the proceeds to upgrade her condemned vehicle, Ky aims to prove she's got more going for her than just her family's famous name. But business will soon have to take a backseat to bravery, when Ky's change of plans sails her and the crew straight into the middle of a colonial war. For all her commercial savvy, it's her military training and born-soldier's instincts that Ky will need to call on in the face of deadly combat, dangerous mercenaries, and violent mutiny...

Classic Space Opera of the Best Kind by Tom (Posted on 2/4/2019)
I purchased the first two episodes on a whim and was pleasantly surprised. Very creative series with compelling characters and great plot. Of course, the dramatization is terrific in the best Graphic Audio tradition. I'm hooked. Will have to listen to the rest of the series.
Vatta's War by Rodney (Posted on 9/13/2018)
Great story and excellant GA production. I was really sorry for the series to end.
Trading in danger(1) by G. (Posted on 6/12/2018)
New to the series..It's starts slow but holds your interest
Review by Bos (Posted on 6/8/2017)
what a great story this is, awesome job GA.
A Good Conversion by James (Posted on 4/16/2017)
When I bought this to listen to I hadn't recalled that I had read the book before. But, the production is quite good; enough that I don't mind revisiting the story. At first, the selected voices clashed with what I had in my mind, but the voice acting and overall production is good and I quickly got over it. I certainly plan to buy and listen to the remainder of the series.
Vatta's War trading in danger by Christina (Posted on 2/23/2017)
My husband very much enjoyed the story. We will download part 2. The sound quality of the download was excellent
The Setup by Daniel (Posted on 2/21/2017)
This is a really amazing production, the SFX and the acting is film quality. I am still trying to get use to the characters, not sure how to see Ky as the scared girl or something else. It is part 1 of 2 so this is the setup and fluff for the world. I have never tried a sci-fi series from graphic audio before and am looking forward to the experience.
Engaging Story Draws You In by Robert (Posted on 1/13/2017)
Part 1 of this engaging story is not only well written by the author, but also well performed by the Graphic Audio team. Every scene unfolds into another one that draws you into the story more and more. By the time part 2 ended I had to download Part 2 to finish. High quality sound effects support but do not overwhelm the story. Well done!

The only criticism I might have is minor. It would be nice if the downloaded file and Graphic Audio app would have chapter breaks so I can start exactly where I left off between listening sessions.
My first introduction to Graphic Audio by Topher (Posted on 11/16/2016)
My buddy and I took a road trip to Las Vegas, which is a 9 hour drive from my hometown. He started this in the vehicle while on the way there, and we didn't listen to anything else the whole way to and from Vegas. I didn't even want to pause it for restroom breaks or fuel stops. And that was just the first half of the first book! Since then I've listened to the entire series several times over the last few years, and enjoy it more each time. My daughter has overheard me listening to it, and is now highly interested in it. As her reading level matures, I'll be glad to enjoy it with her as there is a strong female protagonist, who is her own hero!
Excellent story, wish there was more than just the 5 books.
Good Set Up by Travis (Posted on 7/18/2016)
Part 1 of Book 1 of the "Vatta's War" series is a good set up for the rest of the book and series as a whole. GA always goes a good job with adapting books into audio theater, and the full cast, in addition with the sound effects and music only heighten the listening experience. The characters are very likable, and the story, while not what I expected was intriguing and kept me interested.
Vatta's War - Trading in Danger by Bill Fluty (Posted on 6/7/2016)
I gave the first title of this space series a shot out of boredom. Fantasy is not my thing, and it accounts for many of the new releases at GA these days, and most of the series I personally like have either been completed or cancelled (probably due to poor sales). I began with low expectations, but each disc not only kept my interest, it left me anxious to pop in the next CD to see what came next. The GA production is top-notch as always, with the voice talent, music and sound effects making for a seamless audio experience. The main character is compelling, and Moon has created an interesting universe from which to play out the action. I was surprised a time or two at unexpected plot twists and there was enough action to keep even this old Mack Bolan enthusiast interested, although I would have liked TRADING IN DANGER even if not a single shot had been fired. Enough loose ends and characters mentioned but left unmet are around to make a fine sequel and I look forward to ordering the second book in the series.
Vatta's War by Armand (Posted on 3/19/2016)
Elizabeth Moon has done it well with this story! Outstanding action/personal story entertains every minute.... Love it so far! Bought them all!

Good character development paced well and easy to follow. Excellent GA effects as always.

I just started reading this and haven't got to far into it yet.
Great Story! by Stacey (Posted on 11/25/2015)
This story is awesome, it moves at a good pace, and great characters! The story is so cool, and it really is like a 'Movie in Your Mind'! You can just picture all of the actions!
Great Start to series by Lionel (Posted on 10/14/2015)
Part 1 sets up the series and introduces you to the characters. Not too much happens in this part, but again great performances, and effects! Love the choices for the voice acting as well.
My First Graphic Audio by Jonathan (Posted on 10/6/2015)
Engaging and Thrilling. Elizabeth Moon delivers a futuristic adventure that is sure to please. This first book may be a bit slow for some, but it is a worthwhile investment that starts everything off for the whole series.
Addictive story by Mark (Posted on 9/12/2015)
Great job Graphic Audio. I really enjoyed the story. I hope I hear more Space and Syfi stories in the future. I wanted to purchase all of the Vatta Wars after hearing the first book. Again good job.
This was an interesting read by Shane (Posted on 5/1/2015)
I loved this book.
I enjoyed it so much I have decided to purchase the rest of the series.
Sci-Fi Special by Daniel (Posted on 2/7/2015)
I really enjoyed listening to the first installment of Vatta's War. I plan to listen to every bit of it that I can. The main character seemed a bit shallow to begin, but it rounded out about mid book. If GA continues to produce items like this, then I'll keep coming back.
Very Engaging by Christopher (Posted on 10/10/2014)
I've listened to audio books before, however the average audio book is read by a single person that is trying their very best to be interesting to listen to while portraying ever character in the book. This on the other hand is an engaging book such as Vatta's War, scripted out and acted out by multiple voice talents and edited so well that you could literally lose yourself in the story-telling and just enjoy.
a good listen by Mary Jo (Posted on 10/10/2014)
I didn't know what to expect. I am unfamiliar with this author. I only purchased part one of this series. I enjoyed it so much I bought part 2 of this series. My only complaint is that background makes it a little slow beginning. This is a very good production.
Vatta's War Series by Rikki (Posted on 9/27/2014)
This is the first audiobook experience that I had with Graphic Audio. It is still my favorite one so far. The characters are rich and the amazing writing is complimented by a great cast that truly brings it to life. I definitely recommend this to anyone who likes a good space opera.
Fantastic series by Mason (Posted on 9/21/2014)
The start of a very good series. Definitely suggest giving the free audio a listen to and decide from there. Kept me hooked all the way. Lots of action and character.
Makes this an enjoyable story! by Barbara (Posted on 8/13/2014)
I've tried the audiobook from Tantor, also available at Audible, but can't stand the whining voice used for Kylara Vatta, the main character. This Graphic Audio multi-cast edition really makes the book an enjoyable story. I have most of the excellent Graphic Audio recordings in the Serrano Legacy series, and now I think I'll be adding more books in this Vatta's War series.
Vatta's War 1: Trading in Danger by Darold (Posted on 5/21/2014)
I enjoy listening to this. It keeps my wanting more. I don't like to pause to answer the phone.
Amazing detail! by Catdaddy (Posted on 2/7/2014)
Elizabeth Moon's customary attention to detail makes for a very believable world. On these spaceships, bolts get tightened and manifests get signed. Just as she did in The Deed of Paksenarrion (and, GA? ADAPT THIS. It's gold - your ticket to the LOTR cash cow), Vatta's is a world that feels very lived in and very authentic. It's a slow burn, but burn it does and well worth the payoff.
truckdriver by Casey (Posted on 11/3/2013)
Love this series!! I have bought it twice, once at truck stops then as a download so it doesn't get destroyed again. great story, long story to burn the miles.
1St book i got by John (Posted on 11/1/2013)
I was not a fan of Elizabeth Moon, but once i listed to this book, and the rest of the series. I had to listen to more and she also made the Serano Legacy, in this book has it moments from high hope to extreme doubt. I have to say if you have nvr listed to a full cast audio book with sound effects you are missing out, Try this one.
Tricky to rate, but I will give it 4 headphones by Mats (Posted on 9/29/2013)
I found this title a bit tricky to rate. The acting and narration is great (as always), and i got a great sense of how the world of Vattas War function. But it is mostley setup and i didnt find part one very exciting. However, part two more than made up for it since it delivered on everything part 1 promised. I will give it 4 stars but thats only if you get both parts.

To use a poker term; if you buy part one, you are pot committed. So follow through and get part two also.
