Vatta's War
2 : Marque and Reprisal (1 of 2)

by Elizabeth Moon
Mar 1, 2010
5 Hours
Ages 13+
Although the exciting military career she hoped for never got off the ground, Ky Vatta ended up seeing plenty of combat when she took the helm of one of the commercial transport vessels in her family's fleet...and steered it into a full-blown war. Now the lessons she learned in that trial by fire are about to pay off - because this time, the war has come to her. Someone has launched a full-throttle offensive against Vatta Transport Ltd., Ky's father's interstellar shipping empire. In short order, most of Ky's family is killed, and subsequent attacks sever vital lines of communication, leaving Ky fighting, in every sense, to survive.

Ky is determined to identify the ruthless mystery enemy and avenge her family's name, but she needs not only firepower but information. And she gets both in spades-from the band of stranded mercenaries she hooks up with; from her black-sheep cousin, Stella, who has been leading a secret life; and from Stella's roguish ex-lover, Rafe. Together they struggle to penetrate the tangled web of political intrigue that is wreaking havoc within InterStellar Communications, on whose effective operation their own livelihoods-and perhaps lives-depend.

But the infighting proves to be infectious, and it isn't long before Ky's hired military muscle are turning their suspicions on the enigmatic Rafe, whose wealth of knowledge about ISC's clashing factions and startling new technologies has begun to make him smell like a rat...or a mole. With swift, violent destruction a very real possibility, the last thing Ky needs is a crew divided against itself-and she's prepared to take whatever measures are necessary to ensure that Vatta stays in business, as well as in one piece.

What she is not prepared for is the shocking truth behind the terror-and a confrontation with murderous treachery from a source as unexpected as it is unrelenting.

Just gets better and better by Tom (Posted on 2/13/2019)
Halfway through the second episodes and the storyline just gets better. Love this series!
With a Bang by Daniel (Posted on 9/18/2017)
With most 2nd books in a series, I don't expect much. I feel like most authors are still finding out who the characters are and will try and test some things that in the first book they did not have the opportunity to do. That is not the case here.

The action kicks right off and this will set the pace of the rest of the series. There isn't any character growth so much as a discovery of what they are capable off. Ky is an amazing character, she is a character that has always been what she is but she has never been in a situation before that allowed her to be her real self.

The Voice acting and SFX are amazing. We follow Ky and her Cousin and how Graphic Audio handle the transition between the two arcs made the story feel seamless. I love the theme song, it is amazing, I can see the title flying in like a movie and see the intro credits like a real film.
Nothing Slow by Daniel (Posted on 9/18/2017)
This is an incredible series I love the design and experience of the story. I imagined a lot of the elements for the Mass Effect series and wonder if they drew their inspiration from this books. There is an amazing blend of Drama and action in these stories. Ky is one of my new favorite characters. She is a strong character and has an incredible journey of discovery about herself.

I did not know that Nanette Savard was Ky. It blows my mind that the main character and narrator are the same. My mom pointed it out and I am still amazed at the differences. I love the production and quality of these stories.

These are not just readers or simple actors but honest Voice Actors. There performance not only make the character real but make the whole journey so much more vivid.
Higher Stakes by Travis (Posted on 7/26/2016)
The stakes are raised in this one. Ky Vatta must navigate through even more troubles for the Vatta family, while some additions of new characters and storylines adds on to the already engrossing story. GA continues to excel in the audio adaptions. The voice acting is spot on and the sound effects and music just add to the emotions and action of the scenes.
2nd in the Vatta's War series by Bill (Posted on 6/30/2016)
Second book in the series maintains the high level of entertaining space opera, while introducing additional characters and continuing the slow characterization build up for the main protagonists. As with the first book, MARQUE AND REPRISAL provides an action-filled voyage without resorting to a traditional shooting war. Since this is the second of a five tier arc, there are more loose ends than resolutions, but the pieces are being set in place with care. Production values are typical Graphic Audio (i.e. superb). Looking forward to the next installment.

Great story. Keeps you involved with twist.
GREAT! by Lionel (Posted on 10/22/2015)
Now the action picks up! There is alot going against the Vatta family this time, and we are unsure why. Another quality production from Graphic Audio. Good job guys.
The Journey Continues by Norman (Posted on 1/19/2015)
Marque and Reprisal introduces one of my favorite characters in the series. Stella, and WE like Ky finds that theVatta women are not to be underestimated. I love the touches GA adds like the background noises and music crescendos when the action Starts. Though KY while likable her Naivety irks me sometimes
Very good by Mason (Posted on 9/21/2014)
All that subtle character building in the first book comes out in spades as more and more characters are added to the cast list. Lots of memorable characters and action. If you liked the first book...it only gets better!
Some of GA’s very finest work by Catdaddy (Posted on 9/18/2014)
I've listened to a very great deal of GraphicAudio's comic book and fantasy offerings. This is the single best title I've heard yet.

From the first moment, the characters are utterly authentic, flesh-and-blood people caught in fantastic "hard sci-fi" situations. Building directly from the 'slow burn' exposition laid out in Book One, the action now begins immediately. Yet in this series, a shooting will leave psychological marks and lead to legal entanglement, and one can feel the lasting, smoky residue left by an explosion. One cares deeply about these people. Nannette Savard leads an exemplary cast. The performances and sound design are up to GraphicAudio's customary, very high standards, but they benefit from the best script I've heard to date.

The rating is a soft PG-13, with some intense violence and a bit of bloodshed, but no sex nor any "bad language" at all. Listening to "Book I: Trading In Danger" first will certainly enrich your experience. "Marque and Reprisal," however, is essential as it sets up the key elements and characters for the remainder of the series. But regardless: this production is not to be missed. Highest marks.

Another great book in the series. The plot keeps advancing, drawing you deeper into the action and intrigue of the story line. A most enjoyable listen.
Review by Lara Chiquet (Posted on 5/23/2013)
This was the most amazing story I have hear/read. I have gone though all 5 books at least 7 times. As a VFX artist I have all the time in the world to enjoy audiobooks and Vatta was by far the best.
