44 : Crucible of Time

by James Axler
Nov 1, 2006
6 Hours
Ages 18+
In the Centuries after the nuclear devastation of America, life favors those who maintain their fighting edge in the lawless wastelands. In a nearly untouched remnant of California, a land of pines and roaring rivers, forgetfulness is tempting for a much-tried band of warrior survivalists. But Ryan Cawdor, son of an East Coast Baron, knows that in the Deathlands even a tiny glimpse of heaven can be a portal to hell.

An insular group of fanatics calling itself the Children of the Rock is leaving a trail of barbarism and a growing tide of hate in it''s wake. The leader of the cult is connected to Ryan''s past-to Trader and the war wagon days. Littered with victors and losers, it''s a past some can''t walk away from... In this haven in a ravaged country, Ryan and his warrior wayfarers find that new laws of survival have emerged.

In the Deathlands, the wrong move buys eternity.

Another Good One by Vann (Posted on 1/8/2019)
With this group of unlikely friends, there is never a dull moment. Taking a into California where they get to dine on...well...not so normal meat. GA did well with this one.

Better than the walking dead by Connor (Posted on 11/19/2017)
Why isn't this on TV?

Ryan and the Gang vs a bunch of Dumbass, redneck, Christians, who don't realize that there is a nuclear hotspot nearby making their "Zion" community sterile.

Great story, great lines.

Ryan keeps fighting on he never gives up know his friends are counting on him.
Another Punt, Pass & Kick contest, Deathlands-style by Tad (Posted on 4/14/2017)
This one follows a familiar storyline: Companions arrive at ville run by dude with axe to grind, who sets up a skills competition (similar to the NFL's beloved P,P&K) wherein Mildred out-shoots the ville's best shootist, Jak out-fights the best fighter, etc...
Great fun ensues. A well-paced entry into the DL cannon which won't make you stop and think too often, which is a good thing.

I had lost touch with these books years ago since I am not a over the road driver any more. I see that they have kept them going and can't rate higher tan 5 or I would. All of the heartlands are very addicting.
