Dinner at an ancient Cornish inn leads to one baffling disappearance after another in the latest intriguing Ishmael Jones mystery.

“It’s just a nice weekend, in a nice country inn. Nothing bad is going to happen …”

Ishmael Jones and his partner Penny are attending the re-opening of Tyrone’s Castle, an ancient Cornish inn originally built by smugglers. Over dinner that night, the guests entertain one another with ghost stories inspired by local legends and superstitions. But it would appear that the curse of Tyrone’s Castle has struck for real when one of their number disappears into thin air. And then another . . .

Is the inn really subject to an ancient curse? Skeptical of ghost stories, Ishmael believes the key to the mystery lies in the present rather than the past. But with no bodies, no evidence and no clues to go on, how can he prove it?

Reviews

Another fantastic installment by Amy (Posted on 8/13/2018)
This series consistently delivers great mysteries that give me the heebie-jeebies while simultaneously giving fascinating characters. And of course there's Ishmael and Penny, whom I adore with all of my heart.

This story knocked it out of the park. I loved seeing Ishmael out of his element a bit, and being unsettled by what was going on. I love my spaceboy, but he seems a bit too impenetrable at times. It was nice to see him develop by having to be broken down even a little bit.

The actors of course were brilliant as usual. Scott and Laura are spectacular as Ishmael and Penny. Todd, Dawn, Eileen, Nora (whom I didn't even recognize, damn!) and the rest of the crew truly brought these new characters to life. I cared about these people, was worried when they were in peril. That's some Grade A talent.

Can't wait for book 6!
Really liking this series. by Michael (Posted on 8/11/2018)
Nice mix of sci-fi, supernatural, and plain mystery. The author plays with old story tropes and puts a nice twist on them. Its essentially the same setting and story each book with small variations on aliens, mummies, vampires and murder mysteries. The real enjoyment come from the twists, occasional gore, but mostly from the slow reveal of the main characters of Ishmael and Penny. Scott McCormick and his fellow actors really seam to mesh and keep the story exciting even over the slower parts.

Try the first in the series (Dark Side of the Road) featuring an murders in old mansion in the middle of nowhere in a massive snowstorm. Every single cliche from older books on the same theme is there but with a funnier, more modern twist. If you like that one, you'll like the rest of the series.
